The Tap Dancing Dog

The other day there was a dog

That stayed up very late

Watching musicals and dance shows.

He thought that they were great!

And as he watched the people dancing

Something stirred deep down inside.

And he knew he’d never know

If he never even tried!

So, in the middle of the night,

When everything was quiet,

He felt it was the perfect time

For him to simply try it.

tap. tap. tap.

He danced across the floor.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

He danced right through the door.

TAP. TAP. TAP.

He danced a little more!

TAP! TAP! TAP!

It’s time for his encore!

And then, “DEXTER!”

He heard his name really loud.

And he thought it was his people

About to say that they were proud.

They said, “Your dancing’s really good,

But your timing’s not right.

Please stop dancing

In the middle of the night!”

And then he heard the three words

That always made him frown.

And he dropped his head a bit

When they said, “Go Lay Down!”

So he moved out of the room

And was as quiet as a mouse.

And wandered through the dark

To the other side of the house.

But the music was inside him!

And he had to let it out!

So he had to do some dancing...

Of that there was no doubt!

tap. tap. tap.

He danced across the floor.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

He danced right through the door.

TAP. TAP. TAP.

He danced a little more!

TAP! TAP! TAP!

It’s time for his encore!

His little feet were flying

And a smile lifted his face!

He felt so free and awesome

As he danced about the place.

And he tapped and he danced

And he danced and he spun.

And he kept on dancing

until the morning had come.

Then he finally stopped

And found his best bed.

He circled it twice

Then laid down his head.

And as he began to drift

And he began to rest.

He couldn’t help but feel

That this night was his best.
